Skip Hire Terms and Conditions
PLEASE READ ALL OF THE FOLLOWING IMPORTANT INFORMATION
The following details and guidance is to ensure a smooth and compliant skip hire. These details form part of our Terms and Conditions of Hire. We request particular attention is paid to the ‘Prohibited List’ and ‘Special Waste Instructions’ below, especially if you wish to dispose of Plasterboard.
Invoice and Payment Instructions
- Invoices are sent to your email address following your booking.
- Please check your junk email folder if you have not yet received the invoice before contacting our office on 01795 843343 or by replying to this email.
- Click on the ‘review and pay’ link on the covering email and follow the instructions to pay. Accepted payment methods include credit/debit card and bank transfer using the bank details provided at the foot of the invoice.

Key Terms and Conditions Overview
Please ensure that all persons using the skip are made aware of the following conditions, especially the ‘PROHIBITED ITEMS LIST’ and ‘SPECIAL WASTE INSTRUCTIONS’ sections below.
Failure to read is NOT a valid reason for non-compliance
- By hiring a skip from us, you agree to comply with all terms and conditions outlined in this document.
- It is your responsibility to ensure the skip is used in accordance with all legal and safety requirements.
Level Loads Policy
- All skips must be filled level with the top edge. Overfilled skips cannot be collected for safety and legal reasons.
- If the skip is overfilled, excess waste will be removed.
- We do not accept additional payment for overloaded skips so please do not ask.
- Our Driver(s) has the final say on what is a level load
Prohibited Items List
We only accept non-hazardous waste, and the following items are classified as hazardous and therefore prohibited.
No Asbestos, Asbestolux or Lath & Plaster
Roofing Tiles with insulation foam attached.
Empty Paint tins only, and no solvents, or chemicals.
No Dust, Fibres, Powders or Ash (i.e any waste byproduct such as cement dust, sawdust, fire ash, asbestos fibres)
No Liquids or sludges of any kind (including oils, wet concrete or floor screed)
No Tyres (including rubber tracks)
Or Fluorescent or energy saving light bulbs
No Fridges or freezers, TVs, computer monitors or fire extinguishers
No Batteries of any kind especially lithium batteries due to their fire risk
No Medical, clinical, food, animal or human waste (including dog excrement and soiled nappies)
NO BIG TREE TRUNKS
The base including the root no bigger than a football
Gas cylinders or bottles must be returned directly to the company stated on the item
Special Waste Instructions
CARPET
Anything over a quarter of the skip will be charged by weight.
GLASS
To be kept separate from all other waste within the skip and safely contained in a box or container.
We will supply a tonne bag for larger quantities upon request.
Any glass over one tonne bag will be charged by weight.
GREEN WASTE
Cannot be directly mixed with other wastes. *See below*
HARDCORE AND SOIL
only clean, uncontaminated materials are accepted and not directly mixed with other wastes. *See below*
MATTRESSES
additional charge of £45 per item
NAILS AND SCREWS
Before placing nails or screws in the skip with soil, hardcore, or garden/green waste, they must be secured in a separate container, as they cannot be mixed directly with these materials.
PLASTERBOARD
To be kept dry and separate from all other waste within the skip and safely contained in a box, bag or container.
We can supply a tonne bag for larger quantities upon request.
All bagged plasterboard must be placed to one side of the skip.
We do not accept plasterboard with other wastes attached, especially tiles.
*PROCEDURE FOR DISPOSING HARDCORE, SOIL AND GREEN WASTE*
Soil to be placed in skip first, followed by hardcore and then green waste on top, making sure to place something (i.e. plastic sheet) to prevent the green waste from being mixed with either the dirt or hardcore.
The same procedure to follow if you are disposing of green waste, soil or hardcore with general waste. General waste must be separated from inert materials
SHREDDED WASTE, ESPECIALLY SHREDDED GARDEN WASTE MUST BE BAGGED
If prohibited items are found in a skip, the customer will be liable for removal costs and any associated penalties.
ALL SKIPS ARE EMPTIED BY HAND. PROHIBITED ITEMS WILL BE FOUND AND RETURNED.
Please note that normally the full skip will be returned to your site, where it will be your responsibility to safely remove the unaccepted item(s).
Should the skip be returned and require complete emptying, then a haulage fee up to £120 will be deducted from the initial skip payment, with the remaining amount being refunded following the successful collection of the emptied skip.
Skip Usage and Safety Guidelines
- No fires: Lighting fires in or near the skip is strictly prohibited.
- Any subsequent damage will be charged, including damage caused by prohibited waste, such as wet concrete/floor screed.
- Skip positioning: The skip must remain in the delivery location. Do not attempt to move the skip after delivery.
- We cannot guarantee to safely remove a skip if it has been moved from the original position.
- Damage liability: The customer is responsible for any damage to driveways, pavements, or property caused by skip placement, unless caused by our proven negligence.
- Access: Ensure clear and safe access for delivery and collection vehicles at all times.
Payment Terms
- Payment is required within the timeframe specified on your invoice (usually prior to or on delivery).
- Failure to pay by the due date may result in suspension of skip services.
- Payment by cash must be handed to the driver on delivery. You will be required to bring the cash payment to our yard in person should you miss the driver. If this is not possible, then payment will need to be made using either a debit or credit card, or alternatively by BACS transfer following the receipt of a Vat invoice.
- We do not accept payment on collection and will not collect any skip unless payment has been received in full beforehand.
Indemnity Clause
By accepting these terms, you agree to indemnify and hold harmless the skip hire provider from any claims, damages, or expenses arising from your use of the skip, including but not limited to unauthorised or prohibited waste disposal, improper use, or damage to property.
Skip Collection Procedure
- You can off hire the skip by calling 01795 843343 or emailing sales@tjskips.co.uk
- Otherwise the skip will be automatically collected just after your hire period ends which is stated on your invoice.
- If you wish to extend your hire period up to 6 weeks an additional charge of £50 + VAT must be booked and paid in full at least 1 week in advance.
- Please ensure the skip is accessible and not obstructed during this collection period.
- Please contact us at least 48 hours in advance if you require a specific time of day or date to ensure no obstructions.
Responsibility and Ownership
- Responsibility for the skip and its contents remains with the customer during the hire period.
- The skip remains the property of the T J Skips at all times and the customer agree to reimburse T J Skips in full should the skip be damaged or is removed by another party.
- The responsibility of the contents only passes to T J Skips on collection and once payment has been received in full.
- The customer is liable for any prohibited or hazardous items placed in the skip.
- The customer is also liable for any waste that exceeds the boundary of the skip.
- T J Skips are within their right to remove the skip in its original empty condition if payment is being withheld for whatever reason.
Liability and Limitation
- Customers are obliged to follow all guidance and legal requirements for waste disposal and skip use, including those as stated in The Environmental Protection (Duty of Care) Regulations 1991.
- T J Skips’ liability for any loss or damage is limited to the cost of the skip hire, except in cases of proven negligence.
- T J Skip are not liable for delays or failure to deliver/collect due to circumstances beyond our control (e.g., severe weather, mechanical failure, access issues).
